CRITIQUE OF THE CHURCHILL SHOW.
The Churchill show runs on Nation T.V every Thursday from 7.30pm-8.30pm. it is a unique show the only one of its kind here in Kenya. It’s a comedy show where Churchill makes fun of the occurrences of the daily lives of Kenya hence it’s popularity with the Kenyan audience. It has something for everyone including the children hence it is able to aquire for itself quite a large audience. It starts with the host talking about what has happened over the past week on the local scene of course presenting it in a comical way and then there are guest comedian then the guests for the day are invited then we have the toto’s corner then back to the guest then we have the wrap.
I think the show in itself is a good idea it kind of gives that notion to people that it’s never that serious just take it easy. It placed on Thursday towards the end of the week so you are able to unwind after the stress of the week. I think it as a warm up to the weekend. The toto’s corner is a fresh idea which is great but I think it emphasizes more on the difference we have and not the things that bring us together. There is a message about class that Churchill try’s to bring out subtly. I feel a child from the Eastland’s side might feel that the child from the affluent society for example lavington are better simply because of the way the talk, think and act. While it may not be that obvious to the children but the adults watching with them may just break it down for them by the comments they make during the show
Another aspect that is also subtly put across is the tribal differences. Churchill makes fun of a tribe in almost all his show. We all laugh so it easily pass as just being a joke. Often after a the Churchill show my friends from different tribes make fun of the particular tribe that was the subject of jokes that particular day. I think we are not at a time to be reminded constantly of our differences and weakness as tribes but at a time where we need to be more united.
EPISODE ONE
The show begins with a mortage which is good because it provides an identity for the show. Churchill comes from backstage an illustration of smoke is created to make his entrance more dramatic. There is the applause from the audience that gives the feel of a live recording and adds spark to the show. He starts by greeting his audience. I think the editor should have done a better job in editing because you kind notice points where there was editing.
There is no variety of shots the camera person tends to be stuck on the medium shot for the host and close ups on the audience. I think a wide shot of the audience would be nice to try and give us the size of the audience also a wide shot of the stage would work wonders so that the feeling of congestions is eliminated.
EPISODE TWO.
The introduction is the same. The close up shots on the audience is interesting it shows that the people are enjoying themselves especially when they are laughing. The camera person also attempts an almost tilt down shot which kind of replaces a wide shot of the stage. Again the editing points are too obvious. I like the way the camera angle they take when there is a guest on stage, there is the long shot and the extreme close up on there faces.
EPISODE THREE.
Churchill begins by letting everyone know that the show is not for him alone but for every one which takes off the ownership from Churchill which one assumes because it is Churchill live and gives ownership to the audience. I think that makes you obligated to watch it because you feelincuded.
The zooming out is from the stage was a bit dramatic or fast. You could see that that was a zoom out and also in the zooming out the camera person captured another camera person in his shot. I don’t get the need of that shot the point does not came across, the story is not told because everything becomes dark and the only thing I can see saw the stage because of the lighting.
EPISODE FOUR.
I personally don’t like this particular episode because the content is not all that compared to the other shows but it pick up as the show proceeds. The transition between one type of shot and the other is to me very bad because the is no smoothness. Its from this shot to the next, it doesn’t look like you are watching it from a t.v there is no naturalness of viewing. The use of the camera is very conspicuous.
I like the use of sound effects from the band to bring the point home. That is exceptional. The variety of performing artists is also nice because it breaks monotony. I like the way it ends it gives you an appetite for more and also gives you closure psychologically the way Churchill together with the audience go back stage.
EPISODE FIVE
The stage was over crowded by guest artistes. They were around five people who had to perform on this particular episode. The result was that they told a joke or two because of time. I don’t think that that was very wise because it was a kind of hit and run. The audience was quickly introduced to a certain artist then another then another, the audience didn’t get the chance to warm up to the artist.
I like the camera angle of the shot of the toto’s corner at Olympic Primary school . The school is huge so they take an wide shot to give the entire assembly ground.
EPISODE SIX.
This show in nice for the first time the camera is pans so there is a variety of shots. The head room is not taken care we see to much head room. I like the way Churchill takes us back to the good old days it provides a good laugh. There is something about reliving the stupid things we used to do when we were younger.
The music played takes back the older generation to them days and gives the younger generation a feel of what it was like back then. As the old people are reminded on the good old days and as they laugh at themselves the young people also laugh but at how backward those times were and appreciated how far we have come. So it reconciles the older generation and the younger generation.
EPISODE SEVEN.
The stage is poorly light. There are shadows on the shirt badge court of Churchill. I don’t know if it is because the stage has very many bright colors that overshadow everything or the camera was not set right. There are extremes the people appear very dark like the way the African people are portrayed in CNN clips.
I like the use of clips illustrate their point. It shows creativity and the willingness to go the extra mile for your audience, the use of costume is also very clever because it impersonates the person who is being made fun of.
EPISODE EIGHT
The use of a live band creates a good atmosphere to just relax and enjoy oneself. It brings life to the stage and adds to the comedy. One thing about Churchill live is diversity. Other than the different things he includes in the show the show would be monotonous. We know that from this scene this is where we go and from here it’s there then the show ends. He clearly knows that and try’s to season the show by giving it a different feeling every time.
The lights again are not well done there are shadows all over the place. I think the smoky effect on the background does nothing for the show. It is good at the beginning and it should not be carried forward to the rest of the show.
EPISODE NINE.
The drink bar is very original and nice it is a good way to advertise because it not on your face like buy this! buy this! but after you watch the show for a while you think alvaro everytime you want a drink because it is in your subconscious. I like the guest for this particular show because he was engaging even with the audience so it not like a dialogue between the guest and the Host. Also the guest got to dance on stage that was good.
EPISODE TEN.
The show is growing at this stage but still the lights really need to be looked in to. The toto’s corner is also interesting I think it makes the children feel valued and include.
This show has a lot of different and nice shots. There is the panning from left to right of the audience there is a I nice shot of the host and also gives different angles of the host, the audience and the guest. The guest artists are funny and there not too many of them and I like the fact that they were celebrating people in the entertainment industry.
