Critique of TPF 4
6th November 2010
The eviction show.
EVENTS
This is the day that saw Leah from Tanzania leaving the academy. The show was marked with tears and sorrows as the other contestants bid her goodbye. With everything else set, all the judges and teachers present, the show was spectacular with lots of improvement in terms of sound, lighting, camera movements and general features of the show.
CAMERA ANGLES.
Close up angles were most common in this show, as the contestants’ emotional scenes were captured. Ian Mbugua and the other judges were also portrayed in close up shots as they reacted to the performances. For extreme close ups, the shots were few but well executed, for example when showing the weekly happenings, the focus at one point was at Rachel’s, head scarf which wasn’t tied well, and Musechu’s shoe carelessly thrown on the floor. During the show, there as a spectacular bird’s eye view angle taken from the roof of the hall. This portrayed all the audience and judges, giving the viewer a summary of the setting at a glance. The main shots were eye level angles, where shots were taken from the normal eye level, bringing out the reality and making the viewer associate well with the perfomer, judge or teacher at the same level.
CAMERA MOVEMENTS
Lots of panning, tilting, tracking and dolling were observed bringing out different sides of the performance in a unique way. There was however a slight mistake with zooming, as Gaga was performing when was zoomed in abruptly and a blurred image was formed, but the mistake was handled with expertise as the wide shots camera took over.
SOUND
At the beginning of the show, Sheila’s voice was heard introducing the show but the picture portrayed was the programmes’ logo. This situation brought about a mismatch of the sound and image. Another issue affecting the sound was some room noises experienced when introducing the judge, it appeared that one camera man was talking to another, interrupting the flow of sound. The microphones were okay with less feedback compared to other shows and clearer sound.
LIGHTING
In this show, lighting was magnificently done; the three major lighting points were well executed. The key light producing different shades of hue (jells) to match the contestant’s clothes or bring out contrast. Shadows were less meaning the kill light and back light were well executed
