CRITIQUE 08-1290 SARAH KALY-ESAH MOGA

Tahidi high is local production that aims to educate the society on issues that face high school students, it is an action packed high school drama, full of intrigue, love, infighting as well as the usual battle of the sexes. Based on a high-class secondary school, Tahidi High brings to fore the daily conflicts between teachers, students and parents in a typical Kenyan setting. It’s a story about students' struggle to tackle life's dilemmas and challenges and teachers struggling to bring sanity to the young people.
EVENTS
With the setting of a high school every episode has a different theme and the theme is tackled to completion to enable the audience to follow and also learn the moral lessons in the story, most of the time, the episodes lack continuity this is to say, in one episode where a character/ actor is in a situation, as the audience we expect the producer to help us understand what happened afterwards but then in the next episode another thing happens. With the lack of continuity the audience may lack interest in the programme since it does not move to the direction they are aiming at.
CAMERA ANGLES.
Wide shot angles are generally used in the programme, as the whole class has to be shown and sometime the distance to be covered is too far a long shot is used. When focusing on a particular character/actor, a close up shot was used, for instance when one is thinking aloud or talking to him/herself, this is effective since the audience can see the emotions clearly.
Extreme close up was also used, mostly used focusing on the eyes of the characters and this brings out the art of suspense or sorrow from the actor, the audience is able to identify with the character and also get into the mood.
CAMERA MOVEMENTS
Lots of panning, tilting, tracking and dolling were observed bringing out different sides of the performance in a unique way. There was however some slight mistakes with zooming, where the camera man would zoom in abruptly on a character and zoom out at the same speed. In some instances where dolling was needed the zoom was used thus not creating the effect required

SOUND
The sound is clear enough most of the time, the use of a unidirectional micro phone is great however in some situations where the characters are supposed to speak in low tone, the sound is extremely low thus making the audience strain to hear the conversation. Another issue affecting the sound was some room noises experienced when students are in class and all you can hear is murmurs or someone taking at the back, even at one point the audience could hear the producer giving directions, the microphone were okay and most of the time there was no feed back.

LIGHTING
In this programme, lighting was is good; the three major lighting points were well executed. The key light producing enough light however in some show the key light was too bright that the characters appeared to be struggle with it, the shadows were less meaning the kill light and back light were well executed
