08-1458 MOTHER-IN-LAW EPISODE 2

In this particular episode aired on the 19th, September 2010, we have an interesting topic being brought out by the producer, i.e. The Issue of Facebook. It all starts out with Angie, who has relocated to leave with her grandmother Charity, being requested to prepare lunch for the family. Instead of her doing what is meant to be done. I.e. prepare lunch, she decides to facebook with her phone secretly. Charity, thinking that lunch is ready, visits the kitchen with high expectations only to find her grand-daughter busy facebooking. She snatches the phone from Angie who pleads but her pleads fall on deaf ears. Mike on the other side is with her mother Alison, who is busy straightening the seat covers. She at some point speaks to her son who does not respond to the questions being asked. When Alison looks up, she is angered by what her son is doing… facebooking.

In this episode, there exist nice shots of different scenes. An extreme close-up shot on the sufuria with burnt meat on the cooker is established. Mustapha slightly tilts the sufuria and the cameraman tilts the camera at an angle of 45 degrees for the viewers to see the inside of the sufuria. An extreme close-up shot of Mike’s ringing phone is established to bring out the main topic at hand. A medium shot is of Angie and Charity’s house-help arguing is also well established.
A wide-shot of Alison’s house is brought out at the beginning of the show to let the viewers know where the drama is taking place. We then have a cut to a wide-shot of Charity’s house. Also, cuts have been used in different instances: We have cuts of the various actors as they converse. All these cuts are well done as they are not so many and the cutting is consistent with the mood, rhythm, pace and psychological approach of the program as a whole .Wipe has also been used in this episode as we have a transmission from Alison’s house to Charity’s house. We also have a zoom-in of Alison as she converses with her children and a zoom-out of the same actors.
As the programme starts, we have a dolly-in of Alison’s house and later on a dolly-out of the same house.
Music is also used at some point in this episode. In most sections, music is used as a bridge to create transitions. The music lasts only a few notes and it is used to indicate the breaks between segments of the program. For instance, there is instrumental music played as Alison stares at her son who is busy facebooking. This is meant to create the mood present at this time.
Lighting has also been well used in the different scenes. There exists no shading and shadows at the scenes. The lighting also goes hand in hand with the décor of the different rooms within the houses. No case of too much light is noted.
This particular episode has a lot to be learnt from. It shows how facebooking, as a method of interacting has affected the society we live in today and is fit for family viewing.
