Studio operations gave me a moment to remember having gone through the whole theory of console and different mixers. it was a challenge to me despite the fact that I have used the same again and again but thank God its now over and what is left for us is to put more effort in making sure we practice so as to make the skills permanent. The technology is changing day after day so guys don't cram the mixer but try and understand all the functions. I sure in the media houses you will be working you won't be limited to one thing but you will be needed to be an all rounded person and this poses a challenge to every one of us in 264.Remember as much as your theory is important you be expected to showcase your skills and you can apply them to give a quality production.

COM 264 STUDIO OPERATIONS EXERCISE
without a doubt, i believe the studio operations exercise helped me learn alot.
first i will begin with the issue of urgency where the scenario before the the exercise resembled a media house setting whereby we had to struggle to meet deadlines after the work was sent late in the night but we still managed to work under stress with all recording a success at the end of the pulsating session. kudos to all class mates.
residents from the kenyan coast have this adage "kuvunjika kwa mwiko si mwisho wa kupika sima" and so i plan to push my game in studio skills a notch higher.

The eviction show of this program is aired live on citizen television every Saturday night from 8: p.m to 9 p.m.

The show was marked with colour as the contestants on probation repeated their reggae tunes. With the contestants, judges and teachers well positioned for the action, the event kicked off at 8.pm .
Camera movements
There was a poor impression at the beginning when the camera was vividly shaking while tying to aim at the MC’S.
Other camera movements observed included:
• Panning-is used to give the viewer a panoramic view of a set or setting. This was evident at the beginning when the judges, teachers and audience were the point of focus.
Some of the camera shots included:
• close-up – most of the time only the judge’s faces were shown. At the end when the ones on probation were being called out, only their faces were shown.
• Cut in shots.. Shows some part of the subject in detail. Evident when doctor Mitch mentioned Gaelles shoes and the shoes became the point of focus.
Lighting
The lighting was okay at first but in the last 10 minutes of the show there were shadows which made the mc Sheila appear bigger than she actually is.
Sound
The problem of echoes on sound was also experienced for sometime but was later solved.

Tahidi high 12th October 2010
This week's episode of Tahidi high was mainly based on the form 3's who have a problem understanding their physics and they are behind with the syllabus so they have to move fast so that they can finish. so they have to go for after class tutoring. it also revolved around Mr. Kilunda who is having problems at home and he needs money to solve them and is too proud to ask for a salary advance. When he goes to ask a fellow stuff member for money and finds out she is also in need of money herself because she has to pay for her daughter's tuition, he discovers he can also use the excuse of tuition to get students to pay up. he gives the form 3's a tough business studies exam containing topics they have not covered so that they can fail and they have to attend tuition after classes and at lunch hours. he tells them to pay up the normal tuition fee and as usual the program ends in suspense when Mr. Temo the schools principal finds out what Mr. Kilunda is up to.
The lighting was good. We saw close up shots in some scenes. i do feel though that this time there was no lesson for the young people to learn in this episode.

This episode was about Julia one of the students who had ran away from home by drugging her mother to go live with her tout boyfriend and she missed a week of school and when she finally goes to school skimpily dressed, and trying ot hide from the teachers, she runs into shish who forwards her to Ms. Morgan and she receives her punishment.

This episode was mainly based on O.J’s fight with Freddie over Tanya and they were set up as someone filmed them as they were fighting and posted that video online.

It was on the form 3’s who were competing on who will hold the best birthday bash ever. This competition resulted to conflict because the two opposing groups of girls set the bash for the same day and none of them was happy about it despite the fact that they had not invited the same people. The girls were caught fighting and forwarded to Ms. Morgan and on refusing to reveal the truth they are told to go kneel outside with heir hands raised up. In this episode there is also product placement of always ultra pad through the dance competition that will be held in the school for the always sanitary towels.
Generally, the lighting is good.

Conduct a strictly 3 minute live devotion radio programme based on the following guideline:
¨ Fade Up time check/station jingle/programme intro for 20 seconds then fade
out

¨ Fade up instrumental music for 10 seconds then fade under
¨ Apply the scripture reading to real life situation 35 seconds

¨ Cross fade back announcement and time check for 10 seconds
¨ More talk based on the scripture reading for 35 seconds
¨ Fade up instrumental music for 10 seconds then under
¨ Fade up programme outro for10 seconds

Report to the TV studio on tuesday 2/11/10 at 10am (COM 264A) and 3/11/10 at 12:30pm (COM 264B) with 2 copies of script formatted according to knowledge acquired in COM 263 class.

09-0018 Choosing a Local Program Part 2
So after disappointment from Tahidi High, I wanted to get something else to watch. My next option was NTV County Edition. basically, they air the 9 o'clock news from both the studio at the Nation Center and from a field location. The major difference is that they would include features from that town in the news that weekend. I found it quite interesting that they should decide to go all round the country county by county. This particular date was the 17th of October.
As usual the studio transmission was well done. There was good lighting and sound. The presenters used lappelle mics and the main shots were close ups. They however had a stand up before the news started as they were giving highlights.
The field transmission left a lot to be desired. First, the transition between the two was very slow. The presenter in studio would hand over to Allan Namu and Ann Kiguta and you would wait over 3seconds before they responded. this made it look clumsy. Secondly, there was a problem with a feature by Robert Nagila. Allan Namu gave the into and the clip was cued. However, the clip was distorted in color and temporal resolution. The words were faster than the visual feed. The people in the control room were slow in rectifying this.
There was also a problem in the sound control. When Allan Namu came back on air, he sounded as if he was off mic. The person controlling the character generator also made a mistake by assigning the wrong caption to a news story: he gave ' Tapping Clean Oil' to a story that had nothing to do with oil. Apparently, it was the caption of the next story as the story was about cookers that use a special form of vegetable oil.
However, not all was wrong. There was a good use if natural scenery by the field transmission team. they choose a good location that gave the ambiance of the great outdoors. This worked well for the feeling of being in Nyeri county. There were good and creative shots. When Allan Namu was doing a peice on Mungiki, there was a shot of a road and then he walked into camera range from the left. After giving his stand-up he walked out of camera range toward the right. In the next shot, he walked in from the left. This gave the illusion that one was traveling from one point to another.
The live field transmission had very good lighting. One could clearly see the presenters and the set without shadows falling on them. The lighting also created a good depth dimension. Allan Namu, Ann Kiguta and the set were very brightly lit and thus you could see them clearly.As one looked further behind them the concentration of lighting reduced gradually and thus the darker the objects got. This created a bright fore-ground, a moderately lit mid-ground and a very dark background. Another thing that was commendable was the variety of stories. They were able to get new and interesting pieces from around Nyeri for example the fashion crazed Grandy and the 10 Commandments as with "Thou shalt not commit adultery" highlighted in red. This was a nice break from the largely Nairobi centered political plate served by other stations.
Though this was a very good example of electronic news gathering, it only took place over weekends. Sadly, it would be difficult to get 10 episodes before deadline.So I had to abandon this local program for another. That one is Tusker Project Fame.
